Product Description

Double-Sided Polyimide Tape

1. Product Overview

Nomay Double-Sided Polyimide Tape is a heat-resistant double-coated adhesive tape made with a polyimide film carrier and pressure-sensitive adhesive on both sides.

It is also known as Double-Coated PI Tape, High-Temperature Double-Sided Tape, PI Mounting Tape and PI Bonding Tape.

The tape is designed for FPCB and electronic-component mounting, high-temperature fixture positioning, battery insulation attachment, flexible-heater assembly, silicone-foam bonding, gasket mounting, heat-resistant film splicing and automotive sensor assembly.

Silicone and acrylic adhesive versions have different temperature, bonding, removal, contamination and surface-compatibility characteristics. The adhesive system must be confirmed before quotation.

2. Product Construction

  • Carrier: Polyimide film

  • Carrier Thickness: 0.025–0.075 mm

  • Adhesive: Silicone or acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive on both sides

  • Adhesive Side: Double-sided

  • Total Tape Thickness: Approximately 0.060–0.200 mm

  • Common Total Thicknesses: 0.100, 0.130, 0.150 and 0.200 mm

  • Color: Amber or golden PI carrier

  • Release Liner: Single PET liner or double release-liner construction

  • Product Form: Roll, liner-backed sheet or die-cut mounting part

  • Width: 5–500 mm

  • Roll Length: 10, 20, 33 or 50 m

The two sides may use the same adhesive or a specified A/B-side construction with different adhesion levels. Any A/B-side requirement must be defined before production.

Confirm whether the quoted thickness includes or excludes the release liner.

3. Carrier and Adhesive System

Polyimide Film Carrier

The PI carrier provides heat resistance, electrical insulation, dimensional stability and resistance to selected solvents.

It separates the two adhesive layers and helps control the dimensions of converted mounting parts during assembly and thermal processing.

Double-Sided Silicone Adhesive

Silicone adhesive is selected for higher-temperature mounting and bonding to silicone rubber, silicone foam or other difficult-to-bond surfaces.

Representative double-sided silicone PI constructions are commonly used from approximately -30 to 200°C. Selected models may withstand short exposure up to 260°C, subject to exact construction and process validation.

Because both sides contain adhesive, the total silicone content and potential silicone migration should be evaluated for sensitive electronics, optical, semiconductor, painting and bonding processes.

Double-Sided Acrylic Adhesive

Acrylic adhesive is selected for permanent mounting, higher room-temperature holding power and applications requiring a non-silicone adhesive system.

Representative acrylic constructions are commonly used from -40 to 155°C. Short-term performance should generally not be assumed above approximately 155–180°C without exact model data.

Complete silicone-free status must be confirmed for the adhesive, liner, release coating and converting process.

4. Key Features and Buyer Benefits

9. Performance and Operating Conditions

Temperature Performance

Double-sided silicone and acrylic constructions have different temperature ranges.

Selected silicone versions may support short exposure up to 260°C, but this must not be treated as the continuous temperature rating for every double-sided PI tape.

Acrylic versions normally operate within a lower temperature range.

Adhesion and Surface Compatibility

Side A and Side B may require different adhesion levels or different surface compatibility.

Bonding performance depends on the substrate, surface energy, cleanliness, pressure, dwell time, temperature and adhesive coating weight.

Removal and Residue

Double-sided structures contain more adhesive than comparable single-sided tapes. High-temperature residue and adhesive transfer must be evaluated on both bonded surfaces.

Temporary-removal performance must not be assumed unless the exact construction has been tested.

Electrical Performance

The PI carrier provides electrical separation, but the complete tape’s dielectric performance depends on the carrier, adhesive layers, thickness and test method.

Mechanical and Converting Performance

The PI carrier supports dimensional control during die-cutting and assembly. Liner stability, part dimensions, release force and A/B-side identification should be confirmed for converted parts.

10. Comparison and Selection Guide

Silicone vs. Acrylic Double-Sided PI Tape

Choose double-sided silicone adhesive when:

  • The application involves higher temperature

  • The bonding surface includes silicone rubber or silicone foam

  • Temporary thermal mounting or removal may be required

  • The process can accept a silicone adhesive system

Choose double-sided acrylic adhesive when:

  • Permanent mounting is required

  • Higher room-temperature holding power is important

  • A non-silicone adhesive system is preferred

  • The temperature remains within the confirmed acrylic range

Single-Liner vs. Double-Liner Construction

Choose a single-liner construction for standard roll processing and simpler application.

Choose a double-liner construction when both adhesive surfaces require separate protection, staged assembly or different release behavior.

11. Technical Notes and FAQ

Are both adhesive sides always identical?

Not necessarily. The tape may use the same adhesive on both sides or a specified A/B-side design with different adhesion levels.

Can the tape bond silicone rubber or silicone foam?

Selected silicone adhesive versions may be suitable, but the actual silicone grade, surface condition, compression and temperature must be tested.

Can every Double-Sided PI Tape withstand 260°C?

No. Up to 260°C applies only to selected silicone constructions and short exposure. Acrylic versions must not automatically use this rating.

Is high-temperature residue more important for double-sided tape?

Yes. Both bonded surfaces contain adhesive, so transfer and residue must be evaluated on each surface.

Does total thickness include the release liner?

This must be confirmed in the specification. Tape thickness and liner-inclusive thickness should not be mixed.

Is the acrylic version automatically silicone-free?

No. The adhesive may be non-silicone, but the release liner, release coating and converting process must also be checked.

Can the tape be supplied as die-cut mounting parts?

The tape may be supplied as rolls, pads, frames, rings, gaskets and other die-cut parts according to confirmed drawings, liners and tolerances.

Are UL, RoHS, REACH or halogen-free documents automatically included?

No. Regulatory, flammability and electrical requirements must be confirmed for the exact finished construction.
