Product Description
  1. Product Overview

Nomay Metal Detectable PTFE Tape is a high-temperature, non-stick industrial adhesive tape containing a continuous aluminum foil or integrated metal-detectable layer. If a worn or detached tape fragment enters the production flow, the metal layer is intended to help a suitably configured metal detector or X-ray inspection system identify the fragment before the packaged product leaves the line.

The PTFE working surface provides low friction, non-stick release and easier cleaning on heat-sealing equipment. A high-temperature silicone pressure-sensitive adhesive allows the tape to be installed on sealing jaws, heating bars, guide rails, chutes, dead plates and other packaging-machine components.

The product is primarily designed for food, pharmaceutical, medical and high-care packaging operations where ordinary PTFE tape may be difficult to identify during foreign-body inspection. Metal detectability is a risk-control feature, not a universal detection guarantee. The final construction must be challenge-tested with the customer’s actual product, package, inspection equipment, line speed and minimum target fragment.

  1. Product Construction

• Working surface: Non-stick, low-friction PTFE coating
• Detectable layer: Continuous aluminum foil or integrated metal-detectable layer
• Backing option 1: PTFE-coated aluminum foil without fiberglass
• Backing option 2: PTFE-coated fiberglass cloth with an integrated aluminum layer
• Adhesive layer: High-temperature silicone pressure-sensitive adhesive
• Optional handling layer: Release liner for precision die cutting and positioning
• Typical tape colors: Metallic, brown or blue
• Blue version: Provides additional visual contrast during manual inspection
• Available forms: Self-wound rolls, liner-backed rolls, sheets and custom die-cut parts

The metal layer is incorporated into the usable tape construction. An optional release liner is removed before installation and does not provide the metal-detection function.

  1. Backing & Adhesive System

The fiberglass-free PTFE-coated aluminum version provides a smooth, non-stick working surface without glass-fiber reinforcement. It is suitable where fiber contamination is a concern and where improved heat transfer across a sealing surface is beneficial.

The PTFE-coated fiberglass and aluminum composite version combines the detectable metal layer with the dimensional stability, tear resistance and wear resistance of reinforced PTFE fabric. It is more suitable for repeated mechanical contact, longer sealing jaws, guide surfaces and demanding packaging equipment.

The aluminum layer may transfer heat more efficiently than conventional PTFE-coated fiberglass tape. This can change sealing-jaw warm-up, dwell time, line speed and temperature settings. Production parameters must therefore be reviewed after changing from a standard PTFE tape to a metal-detectable aluminum construction.

The high-temperature silicone pressure-sensitive adhesive is designed for bonding to properly cleaned industrial surfaces. Adhesion depends on the substrate, surface condition, pressure, temperature cycling, mechanical load and exposure time.

  1. Application Scenarios / Problems Solved

Foreign-Body Risk on Heat Sealers

Standard brown or white PTFE tape may be difficult for metal detectors to identify if a worn fragment separates from a sealing jaw and enters the product stream. The aluminum or integrated metal layer in Metal Detectable PTFE Tape is intended to help the line inspection system identify the fragment.

Molten Film Sticking to Sealing Jaws

Plastic packaging film, adhesive or product residue can build up on heated sealing jaws. The PTFE working surface creates a non-stick barrier that helps reduce sticking, interrupted sealing and cleaning frequency.

Visual Inspection Requirements

Blue metal-detectable versions create stronger visual contrast against most food products and stainless-steel equipment. This supports manual inspection, but visual checking does not replace metal-detector or X-ray testing.

Heat-Sealing Efficiency

The aluminum layer can transfer heat differently from conventional PTFE fiberglass tape. This may support faster heat transfer, but sealing temperature, dwell time, pressure and line speed must be revalidated to prevent weak seals, film damage or overheating.

Precision Maintenance Parts

Liner-backed rolls, sheets and die-cut parts allow maintenance teams to replace sealing-jaw covers in repeatable dimensions. Pre-cut parts can reduce manual trimming, positioning errors and installation time.

Detection sensitivity is influenced by the tape-fragment size, aluminum-layer thickness, detector aperture, detector frequency, conveyor speed, food moisture, salt content, product effect, product temperature and packaging material.

  1. Performance & Operating Conditions

The typical operating-temperature range is −73°C to 260°C. Actual service life depends on the backing construction, adhesive, sealing pressure, mechanical wear, exposure time, production speed and thermal cycling.

PTFE must not be heated above 316°C because excessive heating can release hazardous decomposition fumes. The tape must not be exposed to open flame or uncontrolled heating.

Before installation, remove oil, grease, moisture, dust, release agents and loose contamination from the sealing jaw or machine surface. Apply the tape using firm and uniform pressure while avoiding trapped air, wrinkles and excessive overlap.

Because the aluminum layer changes heat transfer, the heat-sealing process must be validated again after installation. Check sealing temperature, dwell time, jaw pressure, film condition, seal strength and line speed.

Metal-detection challenge testing must use the actual detector, aperture, production speed, packaged product and packaging material. Dry, wet, salty, frozen or conductive products can produce different detector responses.

Foil-laminated packaging can interfere with conventional metal detection. Where the package itself contains aluminum foil, the customer should evaluate whether X-ray inspection or another validated inspection method is required.

  1. Comparison & Selection Guide

Metal Detectable PTFE Tape vs Standard PTFE Fiberglass Tape

Choose Metal Detectable PTFE Tape when tape fragments must be included in a validated foreign-body detection program. Choose standard PTFE fiberglass tape when detectability is unnecessary and the primary requirements are release, wear resistance and heat-sealer protection.

PTFE-Coated Aluminum vs PTFE Fiberglass/Aluminum Composite

Choose PTFE-coated aluminum when a smooth, fiberglass-free surface and improved heat transfer are priorities. Choose the fiberglass/aluminum composite when higher dimensional stability, tear resistance and mechanical durability are required.

Blue vs Metallic or Brown

Choose blue when visual identification during manual inspection is important. Choose metallic or brown when the application does not require strong color contrast.

Self-Wound vs Liner-Backed

Choose self-wound rolls for direct application and routine machine maintenance. Choose liner-backed material for precision die cutting, kiss cutting, punching, part organization and accurate placement.

Metal Detector vs X-Ray Inspection

Use metal detection where the product and packaging allow stable detection of the aluminum layer. Evaluate X-ray inspection where foil packaging, product effect or detection-system limitations make conventional metal detection unreliable.

  1. Technical Notes + FAQ

Q: Will every metal detector detect this tape?
A: No. Detectability depends on the detector type, aperture, frequency, sensitivity settings, production speed, product effect, packaging and tape-fragment size. A challenge test is required.

Q: What is the minimum detectable tape-fragment size?
A: There is no universal minimum size. The customer must specify a target fragment and validate it using the actual production product, package, line speed and inspection equipment.

Q: Can the tape also be detected by X-ray equipment?
A: The aluminum or integrated metal layer can support X-ray identification, but performance must be verified using the actual X-ray system, product density, package and fragment size.

Q: Does metal detectable mean that the tape is suitable for food contact?
A: No. Metal detectability and food-contact suitability are separate requirements. The final tape construction and intended contact conditions must be evaluated before use.

Q: Does this tape replace a foreign-body control program?
A: No. It is an additional process-control aid. It does not replace preventive maintenance, equipment inspection, line checks, detector verification or documented foreign-body procedures.

Q: Does the aluminum layer affect the heat sealer?
A: Yes. Aluminum can improve heat transfer compared with standard PTFE fiberglass tape. The sealing temperature, dwell time, jaw pressure and production speed must be revalidated.

Q: Which construction should I choose?
A: Choose the fiberglass-free aluminum version for a smooth surface, reduced fiber risk and improved heat transfer. Choose the fiberglass/aluminum composite for greater wear resistance, tear resistance and dimensional stability.

Q: What information is required for a quotation?
A: Please provide the backing construction, total thickness, width, roll length, color, liner requirement, heat-sealer type, operating temperature, detector type, packaging material, smallest target fragment and order quantity.
