Application Scenarios
- Oil and natural gas pipelines: oil & gas gathering and transmission lines, process pipelines where space is limited for direction change
- Chemical process pipelines: pipe bends for non-strongly corrosive media (water, steam, oil products) at ambient and medium temperatures
- Power plant thermal pipelines: boiler feed water, circulating water and low-pressure steam pipelines
- Municipal water supply & drainage, fire protection pipelines and plant circulating water systems
- Shipbuilding and pressure piping for steel structure supporting works
Applicable Features
- Used for direction change under restricted installation space
- Medium pressure rating
Not Suitable For
- Working conditions with high fluid velocity
- Severe erosion environments
- Strong acid and alkali corrosion
- High-temperature oxidation (carbon steel prone to rust)
Advantages
- Compact structure: Short radius (R=1D), saves installation space, ideal for congested pipe racks and tight equipment connection areas
- High structural strength: Seamless monolithic forming with no risk of weld defects. Butt-weld connection; non-destructive testing can be performed after welding, offering good pressure-bearing capacity
- Good impact resistance: Carbon steel has favorable mechanical properties and impact resistance, suitable for industrial pipelines
- Reliable sealing performance: Butt-weld joints can be subject to non-destructive inspection, applicable for pressure media
- Easy procurement and cost-effective: Raw material cost of carbon steel is lower than stainless steel; standard products are widely available
Disadvantages
- High fluid resistance: Sharp bending curve causes larger pressure loss, more eddy current and erosion
- Poor corrosion resistance: Carbon steel is susceptible to rust. Anti-corrosion treatment (derusting + painting / anti-corrosion coating) is mandatory for water-containing media and humid environments
- Not applicable for working conditions with high temperature and strong corrosion: Not resistant to acid, alkali and chloride ions
- Relatively high installation cost: Butt welding requires alignment, welding and inspection, with more procedures than threaded connection
- Heavy weight: Lifting and construction workload is heavy for large-diameter pipelines
- Limited service scope: Not recommended for high flow velocity and severely eroded pipelines
