3. Key Features
-
Solid solution strengthened, with Mo and Nb imparting high strength—no precipitation hardening required.
-
High fatigue, creep, and thermal fatigue strength over a wide temperature range, from cryogenic up to ~982 °C (1800 °F).
-
Excellent resistance to oxidation, carburization, pitting, crevice corrosion, and nearly immune to chloride stress-corrosion cracking.
-
Readily weldable and fabricable with standard processes; excellent machinability in annealed condition.
4. Applicable Standards
Common specifications and standards for Inconel 625 include:
-
ASTM / ASME: B444/B705 (pipe/tube), B704 (welded tube), B443/B446 (plate/bar)
-
International: EN 2.4856, ISO 6207, AMS 5599/5666/5837/5869, ASME SB443/446
In pipe manufacturing contexts (for polished or bright finishes):
-
ASTM B167 / B444, ASME SB167 / SB444, ASTM B829, AMS 5581
5. Applications in Automobile Exhaust Systems
General Application Domains:
-
Automotive & Aerospace: Exhaust ducts, turbocharger systems, engine components, thrust-reversers
-
Marine / Chemical / Energy: Flare stacks, turbine ducting, chemical handling, nuclear components
Automobile Exhaust-Specific Uses:
-
Exhaust headers/manifolds: Excellent at withstanding cyclic thermal loads and corrosive gas exposure.
-
Turbocharger housings & downstream ducting: Benefit from oxidation resistance and high-temperature strength.
-
Downstream exhaust piping: Polished Inconel 625 resists road corrosion (salt and chemical exposure) and maintains structural integrity under thermal cycling.
