ASTM A513 DOM Steel Tube with Precision Structure 1026 High Yield Strength and Controlled Straightness for Hydraulic Cylinders
ASTM A513 DOM steel tubing is a precision mechanical tubing product made from electric-resistance-welded carbon steel tube and then cold drawn over a mandrel to improve dimensional accuracy, wall uniformity, surface finish, and mechanical strength. For buyers specifying 1010, 1020, or 1026, ASTM A513 Type 5 is the correct specification to request when the application requires closer OD/ID control than ordinary ERW tubing. ASTM A513 covers ERW carbon and alloy steel mechanical tubing, including Type 5 drawn-over-mandrel tubing, and applies to round, square, rectangular, and special-shape tubing.

The tube is produced by ERW forming and then cold drawn over a mandrel. This process improves dimensional accuracy, concentricity, surface finish, and mechanical strength compared with standard as-welded ERW tubing.
In mandrel-drawn condition, Grade 1026 typically reaches minimum yield strength of 70 ksi / 483 MPa and minimum tensile strength of 80 ksi / 552 MPa, with 5% minimum elongation and RB 85 minimum hardness.
ASTM A513 Type 5 DOM tolerance references list straightness at 0.030 in per 3 ft for OD below 8 in and 0.060 in per 3 ft for OD 8 in and above.
Typical wall tolerance can be as tight as ±0.002 in on light-wall DOM sizes and up to ±0.017 in on heavy-wall sections, depending on OD and wall thickness.
1010 is suitable for lower-carbon forming and light mechanical parts; 1020 offers balanced strength and machinability; 1026 is preferred where higher yield strength, better dimensional stability, and heavier mechanical loading are required.
We quote and mark the material as ASTM A513 Type 5 DOM, not general ERW pipe. The production route includes ERW tube forming followed by cold drawing over a mandrel. ASTM A513 identifies Type 5 as drawn-over-mandrel tubing, and also requires heat/product analysis to verify chemical conformity.
Before production, we confirm whether the buyer controls OD × ID, OD × wall, or ID × wall. This is important because DOM tolerances are size-dependent. We can specify OD/ID tolerance, wall tolerance, ovality, and straightness in the purchase order so the tube is suitable for boring, honing, turning, bushing, sleeve, or cylinder component production.
We recommend by loading condition and downstream processing. Use 1010 for lower-carbon forming and light-duty mechanical parts, 1020 for balanced strength and weldability, and 1026 when higher yield strength and better dimensional stability are required. For example, ASTM A513 DOM 1026 provides higher minimum yield and tensile strength than 1020 in mandrel-drawn condition.
