PSA technology isolates nitrogen molecules from other molecules in compressed air (water, oxygen, CO2, etc). The carbon molecular sieve (CMS) adsorbent retains all other molecules while allowing nitrogen to pass through. Two connected vessels alternate between adsorption and regeneration cycles to ensure continuous nitrogen flow.
N2 and O2 molecules have different quadrupole moments (N2: 0.31 Å, O2: 0.10 Å), causing the molecular sieve to adsorb N2 more strongly than O2. When compressed air flows through the adsorption bed, N2 is absorbed while O2 is separated. The system uses two towers filled with molecular sieve that alternate between adsorption and pressure-reduced regeneration to produce continuous nitrogen output.
