Product Description

FANUC A16B-2201-0101 | Memory PCB with Serial Spindle Interface — FANUC Series 0/C/D CNC

Memory Board and Spindle Serial Link in One PCB

The A16B-2201-0101 serves two functions on the FANUC Series 0 (0C, 0D, 0F) master PCB. It provides the system programme memory for the 32-bit 0-series control, and it carries the serial spindle (SP) interface — the optical fibre or fibre-to-hardwire communication path that connects the CNC to the AC spindle amplifier.

The 32K base system memory expands to 128K with additional memory ICs fitted to the board. For PMC-L ladder configurations, the PMC programme chips are stored on the memory card rather than in main memory. Losing this board means losing the CNC's stored programme memory and the spindle communication link simultaneously — both functions are on the same PCB.

The serial spindle interface is the board's second distinguishing feature. On machines fitted with Alpha series spindle modules (SPM), the optical fibre link from this board connects through a converter to the SPM. On machines with earlier AC serial amplifiers (the yellow-case series), the fibre link goes directly from this board to the drive. The fibre interface carries spindle speed commands and feedback between the CNC and the spindle drive.

After Replacement — Full Parameter Reload Required

Replacing the A16B-2201-0101 requires a complete parameter reload. Machine CNC parameters, PMC data, and programme content must be restored from backup after the board swap. A confirmed current backup is mandatory before starting any memory board replacement on a 0-series CNC.

Without a backup, recovering the machine's original configuration requires rebuilding the parameter set from documentation — time-consuming and requiring detailed knowledge of the original machine setup.

The adjacent variant A16B-2201-0103 is also used in the 0-series family. Confirm the exact -0101 suffix from the installed board's label before ordering.

FAQ

Q1: What is "Serial SP" in this board's description?

Serial SP refers to the serial spindle interface — an optical fibre communication link between the CNC and the AC spindle amplifier. This link carries spindle speed commands from the CNC to the spindle drive and returns spindle feedback. Without a functioning serial SP connection, the CNC cannot control the spindle.

Q2: The machine shows spindle alarms alongside CNC memory errors. Could this board be at fault?

Yes. Both functions — system memory and serial spindle interface — reside on this single board. A failing A16B-2201-0101 can produce simultaneous CNC memory alarms and spindle communication faults. Before replacing the board, check the optical fibre cable connections at both ends and verify all memory card seating on the board.

Q3: Does the A16B-2201-0101 replacement require a full machine re-commission?

It requires a full parameter reload — all CNC parameters, PMC data, and part programmes must be restored from backup. If a current backup exists, the reload process is defined. If no backup exists, the parameters must be rebuilt from documentation, which is substantially more involved. Always take a complete backup before removing the board.

Q4: What is the difference between A16B-2201-0101 and A16B-2201-0103?

Both are in the A16B-2201 series for the FANUC 0-series control, and are closely related variants. They differ in specific memory configuration and interface details for different 0-series machine configurations. Confirm the exact suffix from the installed board's label — the two variants are not necessarily interchangeable.

Q5: Is the A16B-2201-0101 compatible with the FANUC 16i or 18i CNC?

No. The A16B-2201-0101 is specific to the FANUC Series 0 (0C, 0D, 0F) — the earlier 32-bit 0-series CNC generation. The 16i and 18i are different CNC generations using different board series. This board is not compatible with i-series controls.
