4. About electrical safety testing:
- Common 4 tests of electrical safety testing are insulation resistance, AC Hipot, leakage current and ground resistance.
- Purpose of testing ground resistance is to make sure that, in case of insulation failure, any charged part of the system or all the accessible conductive components need to be 100 % connected with the GND of power source. By testing the resistance between GND and accessible components, we can determine if the tested object meet the safety standard, the measuring value of resistance will be considered as qualified if it does not exceed the standard value.
- Purpose of testing insulation resistance is to test the resistance between two individual components separated by any insulating materials. The basic principle of measuring insulate resistance is ohm’s law -- supplying DC power of given value to the tested object between the conductive component and non-conductive part, which will produce DC current, measure the current, and the resistance could be calculated by dividing the difference between DC voltage and measuring current.
- AC Hipot is a kind of non-destructive testing to make sure if the electric insulating material can withstand a transient high voltage. This is a standard high voltage test that will be tested on all electrical equipment to make sure the insulating materials are qualified, AC Hipot testing can also detect other problems like electric gap and creep distance in production.
- Leakage current has been named as touch current under some standard, it is the current passed through human or animals’ body when they touch on the accessible conductive components. Protective conductor current is another concept of current that pass through competitive conductor, therefore, protective conductive current could not be the reason of electric shock, because the protective conductor must be connected to the earth as per standard. If touch current exceeds a limited value, the operator will suffer electric shock, it may cause serious damage to human’s body, usually, current above 1.0 mA is higher enough to hurt the operator, the degree of electric damage is related to the current size and human’s weight.
