Product Description
Alloy 718 Quenched and Tempered Forged Flange
Alloy 718 (commonly called Inconel 718 or Alloy 718) is a nickel-based superalloy widely used in aerospace, power generation, and high-temperature applications due to its excellent strength, creep resistance, and corrosion resistance.
Chemical Composition
The chemical composition is typically specified in weight percent. A standard composition range (per common specifications like ASTM and AMS) is approximately:
| Element | Composition Range |
|---|---|
| Nickel (Ni) | 50.0 – 55.0% |
| Chromium (Cr) | 17.0 – 21.0% |
| Iron (Fe) | Balance (usually around 17 – 19%) |
| Niobium (Nb) + Tantalum (Ta) | 4.75 – 5.50% |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 2.80 – 3.30% |
| Titanium (Ti) | 0.65 – 1.15% |
| Aluminum (Al) | 0.20 – 0.80% |
| Cobalt (Co) | ≤ 1.0% |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 0.35% |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 0.35% |
| Copper (Cu) | ≤ 0.30% |
| Carbon (C) | ≤ 0.08% |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.015% |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.015% |
| Boron (B) | ≤ 0.006% |
Key Composition Features
- Nickel-chromium base: The high nickel (around half the alloy) and significant chromium content provide excellent high-temperature strength and oxidation/corrosion resistance.
- Nb, Ti, and Al for strengthening: Niobium, titanium, and aluminum form precipitates (γ'' and γ' phases) during heat treatment, which gives Alloy 718 its remarkable strength up to around 650°C.
- Iron as balance: Unlike some other nickel superalloys that are almost all Ni + Cr, 718 keeps costs more manageable by using iron as a balancing element while maintaining high performance.
- Tight control of impurities: Low carbon, sulfur, and phosphorus levels are crucial for weldability, toughness, and resistance to cracking.
Important Note: When selecting or verifying Alloy 718 for engineering or industrial use, always refer to the exact specification you're working to (e.g., ASTM B637, AMS 5662/5663/5664, etc.), as slight variations in composition and heat treatment are allowed depending on product form and required properties.
