316 / 316L Stainless Steel EN1092 Flanges
316 and 316L are closely related austenitic stainless steels. The main difference is their carbon content, which affects corrosion resistance (especially against weld decay) and mechanical properties.
Chemical Composition

Why the "L" Matters
  • Lower carbon content in 316L reduces the risk of carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during welding
  • This improves resistance to intergranular corrosion, especially in corrosive or high-temperature service
  • 316L is therefore preferred for heavily welded structures, pressure vessels, and piping in chemical, pharmaceutical, and food industries
In short, both 316 and 316L share the same alloying elements—Cr, Ni, and Mo being the most important—but 316L's lower carbon content makes it more resistant to weld-related corrosion at a small cost to maximum strength.
