The ASTM D3786 Diaphragm Bursting Tester is designed to measure the burst strength and burst strain of various materials including woven and knitted fabrics, industrial fabrics, nonwovens, laminated fabrics, plastics, leather (both artificial and natural), and cardboard.
Product Overview
Materials without specific orientation cannot be effectively tested for strength on conventional tensile testers. The YG032E automatic hydraulic membrane fracture tester applies multidirectional force generated by static pressure to measure tissue resistance through burst strength testing. This specialized equipment features pneumatic control and is suitable for testing leather, paper, cardboard, and various other materials.

ASTM D 3786 Standard Test Method for Hydraulic Bursting Strength of Textile Fabrics
Test Procedure
Burst testers measure the burst strength of textile materials exposed to increased hydrostatic pressure. This pressure is applied through an elastic diaphragm to the circular area of the sample. The measurement does not depend on the cutting direction of the sample, as destruction occurs naturally in the direction of least resistance.
Procedure Steps:
- The fabric sample is clamped over the rubber diaphragm
- Pressure in the fluid increases at a controlled rate until the specimen bursts within 20 ± 3 seconds (P1)
- The height (extension) of the diaphragm is recorded
- Another test is conducted without a specimen
- The pressure required for this test is noted and deducted from the earlier reading
- (P1 - P2) represents the actual bursting strength of the specimen
