The grinding media can be made from materials such as stainless steel and glass, as well as advanced ceramic materials such as yttrium-stabilized zirconium oxide and cerium-stabilized zirconium oxide, and can range from as large as 10 mm dam to as small as 30 microns diam. The grinding media charge is activated by the rotation of the agitator shaft to create mechanical hydraulic shearing and particle impact. In agitator bead mills, the forces tear apart the solids suspended in a suspension as they are pumped through the grinding chamber.
