Sponge titanium refers to reducing titanium tetrachloride with magnesium or sodium to obtain spongy metal titanium with a purity of 98.5%-99.7%. It is the most important raw material in the production of titanium industry. Sponge titanium is a primary product in the entire titanium production. It needs further casting to obtain titanium ingots, that is, industrial pure titanium, and then can be processed into corresponding titanium materials or titanium alloys.
Preparation of sponge titanium: At present, there are mainly magnesium thermal reduction method (Kroll) method, sodium thermal reduction method (Hunter method) and molten salt electrolysis method in industry. The advantage of the magnesium thermal reduction method is that the reducing agent magnesium can be recycled, and the single furnace has a large production capacity. In contrast, the sodium thermal reduction method has better product quality and low metal impurity content, but has a small single furnace production capacity and a large sodium consumption. The molten salt electrolysis method is still in the semi-industrial test stage.
