Heat Treatment
Titanium alloys are heat treated for a number of reasons, primarily to increase strength through solution treatment and aging and to optimize specific properties such as fracture toughness, fatigue strength and high temperature creep strength.
Alpha and near-alpha alloys cannot be significantly altered by heat treatment. Stress relieving and annealing are processes that can be used for such titanium alloys. The heat treatment cycles for beta alloys are very different from those for alpha and alpha-beta alloys.
The phase composition, size and distribution in α-β alloys can be controlled within certain limits by heat treatment, allowing tailoring of properties.
