Among the characteristics of titanium, the most commendable is its excellent corrosion resistance - its corrosion resistance is almost as good as platinum, and titanium is not corroded by dilute sulfuric acid, dilute hydrochloric acid, chlorine gas, chlorine solution and most organic acids[ 6], but can still be dissolved by concentrated acid [18]. Although the following potential-pH diagram indicates that titanium is a thermodynamically very reactive metal [17], it reacts very slowly with water and air [5].

When titanium is exposed to high temperature air, it will form a passive oxide protective film to prevent oxidation from continuing [5]. When initially formed, the protective layer is only one to two nanometers thick, but slowly continues to thicken; it can reach a thickness of 25 nanometers over four years [19]. But when titanium is placed in high temperature air, it is easy to react with oxygen [5].

This reaction occurs when the air temperature reaches 1200 degrees Celsius, while in pure oxygen, it only needs a minimum of 610 degrees Celsius to form titanium dioxide [10]. Therefore, titanium cannot be melted in air, because titanium will burn before reaching the melting point, so titanium can only be melted in inert gas or vacuum. At 550°C, titanium combines with chlorine gas [6]. Titanium also combines with other halogens and absorbs hydrogen [7].
