Flanges are used to connect pipes, valves, fittings, and special items such as filters and pressure vessels. The cover plate can be connected to form a "blind flange". Flanges are connected by bolts, and sealing is usually done using gaskets or other methods.
The flange face is the surface area of the bearing gasket. There are 6 types of flanges: FLAT FLanges (FF), FLanges (RF), RING FLangES (RTJ), LAP FLanges (M&F), FLanges AND FLangES (T&G). Different surfaces of flanges require different gaskets and should never be matched to prevent joint leakage. RF and FF flanges may have different types of "finish" (i.e. surface roughness): smooth, stock and serrated.
