Why doesn't stainless steel rust?
The main reason why stainless steel does not rust is because it contains more than 12% chromium. Because the alloy is rich in chromium, a passivation film is formed on the surface when the oxidation reaction occurs. When the chromium content is higher than 12%, this The passivation film will be tightly sealed so that iron and other materials will not be exposed to oxygen, and iron or steel will not oxidize without oxygen, and naturally will not rust. But this layer of passivation film is not indestructible. When this layer of passivation film is continuously damaged, the iron or steel in it will be exposed to oxygen and will rust for a long time. Or a lot of metal dust or other impurities are adsorbed outside this layer of passivation film, and rust outside this layer of passivation film will also behave like stainless steel rust. Or, like stainless steel 304, it has absolutely good rust and corrosion resistance in the mainland, but when it is used at the seaside, the rust and corrosion resistance will drop sharply, and 316 stainless steel at the seaside has good rust and corrosion resistance.
