Biochemistry Photosynthetic electron transport inhibitor at the photosystem II receptor site. Mode of action Selective contact herbicide with a short duration of activity. Uses Contact herbicide used post-emergence in rice, at 2.5-5.0 kg/ha, to control broad-leaved and grass weeds, including Amaranthus retroflexus,Digitaria spp., Echinochloa spp., Panicum spp., and Setaria spp. Also used, in mixture with MCPA, in wheat. A mixture with carbaryl is used in citrus crops grown in sod culture. Phytotoxicity Phytotoxic to many broad-leaved crops. Normally phytotoxic to crops which have been treated with organophosphate or carbamate insecticides.
Postemergence with no residual effect against numerous grass and broadleaf weeds in rice potatoes, and wheat. The rate of application of propanil ranges from 3 kg a.i./ha to 4 kg a.i./ha. The herbicide is applied 10 to 20 DAT, or 10 to 20 days after sowing pre-germinated seeds.To avoid crop damage, propanil should not be applied within two weeks after applying carbamates and organophosphate insecticides.

Used pre-emergence for the control of annual grasses and certain broad-leaved weeds in rice, both seeded and transplanted. It shows selectivity in barley, cotton, peanuts, sugar beet, wheat and several brassica crops. Effective rates range from 1.0-4.5 kg a.i./ha. Activity is dependent on water availability such as rainfall following treatment, overhead irrigation or applications to standing water as in rice culture.

2, 4-D + Propanil is Post-emergence control of annual and perennial broad-leaved weeds in cereals, maize, sorghum, grassland, established turf, grass seed crops, orchards (pome fruit and stone fruit), cranberries, asparagus, sugar cane, rice, forestry, and on non-crop land (including areas adjacent to water), at 0.28-2.3 kg/ha. Control of broad-leaved aquatic weeds. The isopropyl ester can also be used as a plant growth regulator to prevent premature fruit fall in citrus fruit.
