Optical splitters are categorized into two types based on their operating principles: fused taper and planar lightwave circuit (PLC). Fused taper products involve the side fusion of two or more fibers, while PLC splitters are micro-optical components manufactured using photolithography technology to form light waveguides on dielectric or semiconductor substrates, enabling branch distribution functionality.
Both types operate on similar separation principles, modifying the evanescent field between fibers through coupling degree and coupling length, and adjusting fiber radius to achieve various splitting ratios. Conversely, they can also combine multiple optical signals into a single output, functioning as combiners.
Fused taper fiber couplers have become the dominant manufacturing technology in the market due to their straightforward production process, cost-effectiveness, ease of connection with external fibers, and robust performance against mechanical vibration and temperature variations.
