The nasal throat swabs usually apply a sterile dacron or rayon swab with a flexible, plastic shaft. The material from the nasopharyngeal swab is dispersed into the liquid medium. Some laboratories recommend removal and disposal of the swab, while others suggest transporting the swab along with the medium.

Collect samples from the nose of throad with flocked swabs -Tilt patient’s head back 70 degrees. -Insert swab into nostril. (Swab should reach depth equal to distance from nostrils to outer opening of the ear.) Leave swab in place for severalseconds to absorb secretions. -Slowly remove swab while rotating it. (Swab both nostrils with same swab.) Place the tip of collected nasal pharyngeal swabs into a sterile nasal swab transport and provative fluid vial for preservation)
