A clutch is a mechanical device to transmit the power from one shaft to another whenever desired. This image shows the components of a clutch. The flywheel is linked to driving shaft and the clutch and pressure plate to driven shaft. The clutch plate can slide axially over the splines cut on driven shaft enabling it to engage and disengage when required. The pressure plate applies constant pressure over the clutch plate via springs leading to engagement of clutch plate to flywheel, hence, transmitting power. When we need to disengage the clutch, we need to pull the clutch plate against the spring force hence cutting off power supply.
