Why Top Balance LiFePO4 Cells Before Building Battery Packs

Regardless of cell grade (A, B, C) or condition (new/used), initial balancing is essential to bring all cells to the same state of charge. Voltage alone is an unreliable indicator for LiFePO4 chemistry due to the flat charge/discharge curve.

Proper initial balancing ensures accurate capacity test results and prevents premature triggering of BMS protection circuits. If balancing issues persist, manual top balancing is recommended rather than relying solely on active balancers.

While parallel connection allows natural balancing over time (weeks to months), manual top balancing provides immediate and reliable results, especially important for large battery banks or cells with varying internal resistance.
