Why you need to top balance LiFePO4 cells before building a battery pack:
Regardless of cell grade (A, B, or C) or whether they are new or used, initial balancing is essential to bring all cells to the same state of charge. Voltage measurement alone is unreliable for determining state of charge in LiFePO4 chemistry due to the flat charge/discharge curve.
Proper initial balancing ensures accurate capacity test results and prevents premature BMS triggering during high or low voltage conditions. For large battery banks or cells with varying internal resistance, manual top balancing is recommended rather than relying solely on parallel connection balancing, which can take weeks or months.
