Whether using grade A, B, or C cells, or used LiFePO4 cells, initial balancing is essential to bring them to the same state of charge. Voltage alone is unreliable for determining state of charge in this chemistry due to the flat charge and discharge curve.
Proper initial balance ensures accurate capacity test results. If cells are unbalanced, it can trigger BMS high or low voltage protection, leading to inaccurate capacity readings. For large battery banks or cells with varying internal resistance, manual top balancing is recommended regardless of initial voltage readings.
