Whether using Grade A, B, C, or used LiFePO4 cells, initial balancing is essential to bring them to the same state of charge. Voltage alone is unreliable for determining state of charge due to the flat charge and discharge curve of this chemistry.
Proper initial balance ensures accurate capacity test results. If cells are unbalanced, it can trigger BMS protection and provide inaccurate capacity readings. Manual top balancing is recommended for large battery banks or cells with varying internal resistance.
While parallel connection allows natural balancing over time (weeks or months), manual top balancing provides immediate and reliable results, especially important for large loads and capacity testing.
