Whether using grade A, B, C, or used LiFePO4 cells, initial balancing is essential to bring them to the same state of charge. Voltage alone is unreliable for determining state of charge due to the flat charge/discharge curve of this chemistry.
Proper initial balance ensures accurate capacity test results. If cells are unbalanced, it can trigger BMS protection and provide inaccurate capacity readings. For large battery banks or cells with varying internal resistance, manual top balancing is recommended regardless of initial voltage readings.
While connecting cells in parallel allows natural balancing over time (weeks or months), manual top balancing provides immediate and reliable results, especially important for large loads and capacity testing.
