Why Top Balance LiFePO4 Cells Before Building Battery Packs

Regardless of battery grade (A, B, or C) or whether cells are new or used, initial balancing is essential to bring all cells to the same state of charge. Voltage alone is unreliable for determining state of charge in LiFePO4 chemistry due to their flat charge and discharge curves.

Proper initial balancing ensures accurate capacity test results and prevents premature triggering of BMS high/low voltage cutoffs. If balancing problems occur, an active balancer may be needed to compensate.

While parallel connection allows natural balancing over weeks or months, manual top balancing is recommended for large battery banks, cells with varying internal resistance, or when precise capacity balancing is required.
