Why Top Balance LiFePO4 Cells Before Building Battery Packs

Whether you purchase Grade A, B, or C cells, or used LiFePO4 cells, initial balancing is essential to bring them to the same state of charge. Using voltage alone to determine state of charge is unreliable due to the flat charge and discharge curve characteristic of this chemistry.

Proper initial balancing ensures accurate capacity test results. If one cell triggers your BMS high or low voltage cutoff prematurely, your capacity measurements will be inaccurate.

While connecting cells in parallel allows natural balancing over time (weeks or months depending on battery bank size), manual top balancing is recommended for:

  • Large battery banks
  • Cells with significant internal resistance variations
  • Applications with large loads
  • Accurate capacity balancing requirements
