Binding/Compressing Cells
Manufacturer documentation often refers to this as "fixture" due to translation. Mild compression is recommended to maximize life cycles. As cells charge or discharge, they expand or contract slightly depending on temperatures and C-Rate.
Cell Compression Diagram
Mild compression helps prevent stress on terminals and changes to internal cell structure, which over time can decrease capacity and performance. This is especially important in mobile applications or those with vibrations. Friction may also wear protective wrapping and casing over time.

A basic general rule is to use approximately 10-14 lb.ft / 140-200 kgf.cm pressure/compression when cells are at 50% SOC (3.200V) @ 25°C/77°F. Always refer to manufacturer specifications data sheet.
This can be achieved using fibre-tape, strapping, or other flexible binding materials. Protect cell corners from crushing. Alternatively, use a frame with end plates pulled together with threaded rods and nuts. Custom cases are another common option.
Tip: When assembling your cell pack, consider placement of temperature sensor probes for your BMS. This subject extends beyond this document's scope.
