Battery Management System (BMS)

Protection Features:

Is BMS Necessary?

Important Facts:

  • LFP cells fail if voltage drops below 2.5V
  • LFP cells fail if voltage exceeds 4.2V
  • Cells do not auto-balance at end of charge cycle
  • Differences between cells increase without balancing

BMS is indispensable for preventing damage to large Li-ion battery banks by preventing cell under/over voltage and managing temperature.

Battery Safety

  • No negative health or environmental hazards
  • Oxygen is bonded tightly to the molecule
  • Chemistry is stable enough to accept charge from lead-acid configured chargers
Life Expectancy

Typical estimated life: 5-15 years, or 2000 to 8000 charge cycles. One charge cycle represents use from fully charged to fully discharged and fully recharged.

Solar Charging Compatibility

Recommendation: Always use LiFePO4/Lithium Ion solar controller, especially for UPS applications. Lead Acid controllers provide constant pulse current that may damage PCB protection circuits over time.

Charger Compatibility

Warning: Lead acid chargers operate at 2.30V-2.45V per cell while LiFePO4 requires 3.65V per cell. Using lead acid chargers will undercharge batteries and prevent proper balancing. We recommend using bundled chargers specifically designed for LiFePO4 batteries.
