Compressors increase the pressure of air or any gaseous medium. Compressor oil is the most important lubricant for lubricating the main parts of the machine series under more or less service conditions.

Traditional lubricated compressors offer the same level of filtration as oil-free compressors and, with the right systems in place, can meet air quality regulations across industries. In general, the air compressor lubricants should have the following characteristics:

• Appropriate viscosity and high enough viscosity index
• Sufficient pour point and flash point
• High thermal stability and oxidation stability
• Low residual oil content
• Excellent wear protection
• Efficient water separation
• Protection against rust and corrosion
• Resistant to foam and entrained air

Proper lubrication can minimize friction. Since friction produces more heat and requires more energy to cool the equipment sufficiently to operate safely, less friction means less energy consumption and lower energy costs.
