The normally closed blow down valve is commonly used to blow down the air/oil separator tank of a rotary screw compressor. The valve is attached to the tank so the tank pressure keeps the valve closed. To “blow down” the tank the valve is piloted open. The piston is designed so that the pilot pressure is less than the tank pressure. The Blow Down valve is a piloted normally open or normally closed valve..

The valve can have an orifice on the exit so that the flow is controlled. The valve is fully pneumatic so that no spring is present. The valve is piloted to act and the system operates to return the valve.

Fault solution - Compressor oil comes out of blowdown valve

1. With compressor off, check oil level in compressor both visually and by indicator switch to verify oil level, excessive oil level may cause this. 
2. Check plumbing of blow down valve the “P” marking on valve should be connected to inlet valve plate and “I” marking should go to ¼ inch tube going to fresh air port of compressor
3. Check blowdown valve for functionality and shifting to insure not stuck or sticking
4. Check coalescer scavenge line sight glass which is located on top of compressor next to coalescer element, when working properly one should see slugs of oil in sight glass, if no oil is visible scavenge line circuit is not working
