Introduction

The Hamil-ton Medical 281637 is a disposable proximal flow sensor that is installed between the Y-connector in the breathing circuit and the patient's airway to measure the flow rate of respiratory gases into and out of the lungs. This sensor is a sterile, single-use device designed to be discarded after use during treatment.

The 281637 comes with a 1.88-meter-long tubing and a 15M × 15F / 22M connector, compatible with most patient interfaces.

Functions

1. The 281637 sensor is located directly in the patient's airway, measuring flow rate proximal to the breathing circuit. This proximity measurement eliminates errors caused by circuit compliance and leakage. This is especially important for patients with low tidal volumes or those receiving pressure-controlled ventilation.

2. It employs differential pressure technology for rapid and reliable readings. The sensor functions as a passive differential pressure transducer, detecting gas flow in the breathing circuit and converting it into an electrical signal receivable by the ventilator. The flow rate range is 0 to 180 L/min, with a short-term maximum of 260 L/min, and resistance is less than 0.027 cmH₂O/(L/min).

3. It provides accurate volume-related parameters. When calibrated with a Hamil-ton Medical ventilator, the sensor offers volume-related parameter accuracy of ±10% or ±10 ml (whichever is greater).

Installation

• Remove the sensor from its sterile packaging.
• Connect the ventilator‑side connector (OD15) to the flow sensor port on the ventilator or breathing circuit.
• Connect the patient‑side connector (OD22/ID15) to the Y‑piece of the patient's breathing circuit.
• Ensure the direction index on the sensor points toward the patient.
• Secure the tubing with the provided tube clip to prevent kinking or pulling.
• Perform a pre‑use check and leak test as per the ventilator's user manual.

Notice

The sensor is single‑use only. Do not attempt to clean, disinfect, or reuse the 281637. It is a sterile, single‑patient device intended to be used for the duration of treatment before being discarded. Reprocessing will compromise its accuracy and sterility.

Calibrate before each patient use. The sensor must be calibrated via the ventilator's calibration menu prior to every patient use. Follow the instructions displayed in the message line – if using the disposable flow sensor PN 281637, the additional adapter for calibration must be attached.

Inspect the sensor before each use. Visually check the sensor body, the tubing, and the internal flap for any signs of damage, debris, or moisture. Do not use a sensor that appears cracked, contaminated, or damaged.
