Blood pressure (BP) refers to the pressure that circulating blood exerts on the walls of the arteries. With each heartbeat, blood pressure changes from maximum (systolic) to minimum (diastolic). This change indicates that the state of the heart's pumping function is an important vital sign. Oscillometric blood pressure measurement is an indirect and non-invasive method of measuring blood pressure. In this method, an inflated blood pressure cuff is placed on the patient's arm or thigh. Blood pressure is measured by partially closing the artery with a cuff. The so-called Korotkov sound is caused by the expansion of the artery wall with each heartbeat. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures were determined from mean arterial pressure and varying Korotkov sound amplitude using an algorithmic interpretation device. It is important to use the correct cuff size for correct non-invasive measurements, as a cuff that is too small can give an incorrect high pressure reading and a large cuff an incorrect low pressure reading.
