Why Are Air Springs Better Than Leaf Springs in Terms of Shock Absorption?


1. Comfort.

Independent leaf spring suspensions are heavy, stiff, offer little comfort, and have long longitudinal dimensions. This does not favor shortening the vehicle's front and rear suspension. The leaf spring pivots are also prone to wear.


2. Economy.

In trucks with leaf springs, tires are typically replaced every 50,000 kilometers. With air springs, however, tires are replaced every 100,000 kilometers. This increases tire life by more than 50%.


3. Safety.

In multi-axle vehicles, air suspension ensures even load distribution between the axles, preventing a single leaf spring bearing from bearing the entire load. In single-axle vehicles, air suspension generally ensures even loading of the wheels on both sides of the vehicle. Air suspension ensures optimal rolling contact between the tires and the ground, thus achieving the best braking effect. Therefore, air suspension is safer than leaf springs.
