Product Description

Product Description

Fume hoods are both a protective and control device fitted in laboratories where chemicals are used. They are a conventional fume extraction unit designed so that airborne contaminants are contained in the enclosure prevented from entering the room or laboratory by means of a protective air barrier between the user and the materials placed within the equipment.

Performance testing is essential to confirm that the fume hood is operating to a level to provide the desired arrest, containment and removal of the fume.

The tests are based on ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 110, Method of Testing Performance of Laboratory Fume Hoods. When the hood is already operational in the laboratory, it is recommended to test in two operating conditions.

For the "as installed" test, the laboratory hood is installed at the customer's location and tested empty, but with the ventilation system in the installation balanced and the hood in its final location. For the "as used" test, the assessment is conducted after the hood has been installed and used by the chemist. The equipment and tools remain in the hood and other activities in the laboratory continue.

More About the Fume Hood

There are a few types of filters that could be required in a fume hood and selecting the correct type of filters for your application is imperative to protecting yourself and your colleagues from any hazardous substances in the air. The most appropriate type of filter is dependent on what types of chemicals you will be using in your daily handlings.

Activated carbon filters are created by steam heating charcoal and graphite at high temperatures (up to 980°C). This separates the layers of crystalline carbon and creates a large internal volume which allows for adsorption of chemical particles to occur. The activated carbon is then impregnated by pre-adsorption of a chemical that will react with the pollutant that the filter is intended to trap. Four different types of activated carbon filters are commonly provided. These are filters that can trap organic, ammonia, formaldehyde and acid vapours.

Hazardous particulates are filtered and trapped in different types of filters than chemical vapours. Usually this would involve a HEPA (high efficiency particulate absorbing) or ULPA (ultra low particulate air) filter. Both filters use layers of dense fibres to create a fine mesh filter that removes contaminants as air is forced through them. HEPA filters have a 99.97% filtration efficiency for particles down to 0.3 μm and the ULPA filters have a 99.97% filtration efficiency for particles down to 0.12 μm

Fume Hood Maintenance

Hoods should be evaluated by the user before each use to ensure adequate face velocities and the absence of excessive turbulence.

• In case of exhaust system failure while using a hood, shut off all services and accessories and lower the sash completely. Leave the area immediately.

Fume  hoods should  be certified, at  least annually, to ensure they are operating safely. Typical tests include face velocity measurements, smoke tests and tracer gas containment. Tracer gas containment tests are especially crucial, as studies  have shown that face velocity is not a good predictor of fume hood leakage.

• Laboratory fume hoods are one of the most important used and abused hazard control devices. We should understand that the combined use of safety glasses, protective gloves, laboratory smocks, good safety practices, and laboratory fume hoods are very important elements in protecting us from a potentially hazardous exposure.

Laboratory fume hoods only protect users when they are used properly and are working correctly. A fume hood is designed to protect the user and room occupants from  exposure to vapors,  aerosols, toxic  materials,  odorous,  and  other  harmful substances. A secondary purpose is to serve as a protective shield when working with potentially explosive or highly reactive materials. This is accomplished by lowering the hood sash.
FAQ

6 Questions to Ask When Buying a Fume Hood:

-Which chemicals will you use within the hood?

-Is a ducted or ductless hood best suited to your needs and available space?

-Where will you place the fume hood in the lab? Consider workflows, access to external exhaust systems, and competing air patterns.

-What size fume hood will best suit your needs? Be sure to consider what (if any) equipment will be enclosed in the hood.

-Are any service fixtures or accessories such as airflow monitors, electrical outlets, water, or gas fixtures required?

-Are base cabinets for acid, solvent, or non-chemical storage required?
