Since its introduction, CMR random fillers have been used in various distillation, absorption and stripper towers around the world. The superior performance of CMR random packaging has been proven in thousands of successful installations. CMR is the random packaging option for most licensing processes. Among the many random packages on the market, parr rings have been popular for decades. Pall rings (and most other cylindrical annular fillers) are characterized by ring height equal to ring diameter, that is, an aspect ratio equal to 1.0. The aspect ratio of cascaded micro-ring random packing is only 1:3, that is, its height is usually only 1/3 of its diameter. This change in geometry appears to be small and has a profound effect on the process performance of the filler. In fact, when dumped in a tower, the "flat" CMR rings tend to be preferentially oriented in the "near horizontal" position, where their cylindrical axis is oriented primarily toward the direction of steam and liquid flow. This is the opposite of the tendency of all-rings (and other rings with high aspect ratios) to preferentially Orient themselves on their "sides" (horizontal rather than vertical cylindrical axes).
