Theory

SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in the specimen react with latex particles coated with SARS-CoV-2 antigens through agglutination, resulting antigen-antibody-latex complexes. The antigen-antibody-latex complexes cause an increase in absorbance, which is proportional to the concentration of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in the specimen in the presence of excess antigen. The absorbance is measured by reading turbidity. The antibody concentration in the specimen is determined by comparing the absorbance to the standard curve.

The sensitivity of this assay early after infection is unknown. Negative results do not preclude acute SARS-CoV-2 infection. If acute infection is suspected, direct testing for SARS-CoV-2 is necessary. False positive results for the This assay may occur due to cross reactivity from pre-existing antibodies or other possible causes.
