Rail-mounted gantry cranes or RMG cranes are often used for fast, safe and automated handling of containers. With high performance, reliability, low operating costs and low energy consumption, the crane plays a key role in facilitating yard operations. The span of the crane is designed according to the number of rows of containers that need to be traversed.

The container gantry crane is a large quay gantry crane that loads and unloads intermodal containers at the container terminal. It spans 5~8 containers wide (plus truck width) and lifts from 1 over 3 to 1 over 6 containers high.

Container gantry cranes consist of a gantry structure that can traverse the length of a quay or yard on rails. The container gantry crane is not an ordinary hook, but is equipped with a special container spreader, which will be lowered to the top of the container to lock the four corner castings of the container.
