There are various of 3D letters, illuminated or none, today we will introduce some types of lighted channel letters.

Standard or front lit 3D channel letters

The most common type of channel letter is the front lit or standard channel letter. The back and sides of this letter are made of metal. The side of the channel letter is also called “return”.

The standard front lit channel letters are internally illuminated by LEDs that illuminate the “face” of each letter. The decorative cap that screws onto the sign face can be made of plastic or metal, while the sign face itself is made of one of two plastics: polycarbonate or acrylic.

Acrylic is brighter, while polycarbonate is stronger. Typically, the color elements of the logo are made of cut-out translucent vinyl or, if the face is a solid color, the acrylic itself can be in its specific color, as long as the color matches the standard colors available. Due to the materials used, the standard front illuminated channel letter height can be customized.

Open-faced 3D channel letters

The open-faced channel letters do not have an acrylic surface attached to the front side. As a result, the LEDs are exposed and the illumination is increased. These LEDs are usually sealed with a durable weatherproof silicone adhesive.

Front and back Lit 3D channel letters

Front and halo lit channel letters have both an illuminated acrylic surface and a “halo” effect. This allows the logo to emit a “halo” of illumination as well as a glowing face. The back of the letters is both exposed and acrylic covered, producing a “halo” effect, and the front is acrylic.

Halo illuminated 3D channel letter

Halo illuminated 3D channel letters can also be referred to as Backlit Channel Letters and Reverse Lit 3D Letters, where the back of the halo illuminated channel letters is lit.

The backlight illuminates the back and creates a very cool “halo” effect around each letter. The front of the letters is sealed with aluminum and painted in a dark color (usually black but it's customerized). The dark letters create the contrast needed for a full “halo” effect.

Standard channel letters, on the other hand, illuminate only the surface of each letter. Halo lit 3D channel letters are often used for signage projects that require a unique, elegant, or distinguished look or brand image.
