Carbon steel (low carbon steel)

Carbon steel (low carbon steel) corrodes most easily and is therefore the cheapest of the most common perforated metals

Carbon steel is made into sheet or coil by rolling flat to the desired thickness while the steel is still hot or after cooling

Differences in process lead to differences in product cost, quality and mechanical properties

Hot Rolled (HR) Steel

HR steel is generally less expensive and produced in thicker gauges of 1.2mm and above. HR and CR steels corrode the most and are therefore the least expensive of the three metals most frequently pierced. Most grades can be protected against corrosion by post galvanizing (immersion in hot zinc) or various paint treatments

Cold Rolled (CR) Steel

Cold rolled steel offers tighter tolerances and a better surface finish. While it can be produced in almost any gauge, it is easiest to produce in thinner gauges of 0.3 – 3mm. This material can be electro-galvanized (ELO), post-galvanized or painted after the piercing process to prevent corrosion

Hot Dip Galvanized Steel (HDG)

HDG products are typically used in indoor and outdoor applications where corrosion protection is required. For outdoor applications, this material is usually painted or powder coated. HDG flat products are 0.3 - 3 mm in size
