1. Nozzle and Flow Regulating Arrangement (Spear)

 The nozzles are used to increase the kinetic energy of the water flow which will hit the vanes or blades attached to the runner.
The amount of water hitting the bucket is controlled by the spear. A spear is mounted inside the nozzle to regulate the flow of water that will hit the runner blades. The nozzle containing the spear is pictured below.
The spear is the conical needle present in the nozzle. It is operated by handwheel or automatically in the axial direction.
When the spear is moved backwards, the velocity of the water flow increases, and when the spear is pushed forward, the velocity of the water flow decreases.

2. Runner and Buckets

     The runner with bucket is shown in the figure below.
     The runner is the rotating part of the turbine. It is a disc with a number of evenly spaced buckets fixed around its periphery.
     The bucket is made from two hemispherical bowls joined together. Each bucket has a wall between two hemispherical bowls called a diverter.
     The splitter splits the jet of water hitting the bucket into two equal parts, and the jet of water is ejected from the outer edge of the bucket.
     The bucket is designed in such a way that the flow of water hitting the bucket is deflected 160 to 170 degrees.
     Pelton turbine blades are made of cast iron, cast steel, bronze or stainless steel.

3. Casing:

The outer covering of the this turbine is called casing. The Pelton turbine with the casing is shown in the figure given below.

4. Breaking jet

When the water flow is completely shut off by pushing the spear forward, the amount of water hitting the runner becomes zero. But the runner continues to move due to the runner's inertia.
