304/L DIN 1.4301/1.4306 Stainless Steel Soft Wires For Flexible Hoses
1/4 Hard is an austenitic stainless steel that has been cold rolled to its 1/4 hard condition.
This increases the metal's attractiveness for mild drawing, stretching and forming operations.
At 1/4 Hard, Type 301 has a tensile strength of 125,000 PSI minimum, and a minimum yield strength of 75,000 PSI.
304 steel has a Rockwell B hardness of 70; for reference, the Rockwell B hardness of copper, a soft metal, is 51.
Simply put, 304 steel is not as hard as some of its stainless steel brothers such as 440 steel (see our article on 440 steel for more information), but still holds its own as a tough general purpose steel.
