Used mostly as gellants in fracturing fluids, guar derivative can be cross-linked with a number of transitional metal ions, as well as borates. Once cross-linked, guar offers excellent carrying capacity to support proppants used in the hydraulic fracturing process. The cross-linked gel is readily breakable with either acids or enzymes.

Guar derivatives can also be applied in low solids drilling fluids as a viscosifier and fluid loss reducer in both fresh water and brines, particularly, spud muds.
