Carboxymethyl guar gum is a light yellow powder substance modified by guar gum, odorless and tasteless, with slight hygroscopicity, and its aqueous solution is a non-Newtonian fluid.

Used mostly as gellants in fracturing fluids, guar derivative can be cross-linked with a number of transitional metal ions, as well as borates. Once cross-linked, guar offers excellent carrying capacity to support proppants used in the hydraulic fracturing process. The cross-linked gel is readily breakable with either acids or enzymes.
