A vertical axis wind turbine (or VAWT) has a main rotor shaft arranged vertically. An advantage of this arrangement is that the turbine does not need to be pointed into the wind to be effective, which is an advantage in locations where the wind direction is highly variable. This is also an advantage when the turbine is integrated into a building, as it is inherently less maneuverable. Additionally, the generator and gearbox can be placed close to the ground, using direct drive from the rotor assembly to the ground gearbox, improving maintenance accessibility.
VAWTs may emit less noise, which can be a problem for wind turbines close to residents. Finally, VAWT is seen as more aesthetically pleasing and able to be integrated into the built environment as an architectural enhancement.
However, despite these potential advantages, some wind industry analysts caution against thinking that VAWT is a panacea for urban wind. Most people note that these designs are not new – Savonius and Darrieus type VAWTs have been around for almost 80 years. The main reason why these turbine designs are not as common as today's HAWT is that their lower efficiency and relative cost hurt project economics. Until VAWTs become more cost-effective, they are unlikely to dominate cities as distributed generation.
