1. When you press the sole of your foot against the brake pedal, the master brake cylinder responds by sending hydraulic brake fluid to pistons in the calipers. The building pressure forces the calipers to close brake pads onto the rotors. The pads protect against damage from metal-on-metal contact, and also help to disperse some of the heat generated by the act of braking.
