Bright round steel is usually a carbon steel alloy, which can improve the surface condition by drawing, stripping or grinding the hot-rolled surface treatment provided by the steel plant. Mild steel does not have a high resistance to corrosion in its untreated form, however, the corrosion resistance can be greatly improved by applying an appropriate surface protection product to the exposed parts of any project.

Black Mild Steel has a dark blue oily surface, and Bright Mild Steel has a silvery grey surface. Because Bright Mild Steel is cold rolled it is accurate in size whereas Black Mild Steel is not as accurate. Mild Steel is reasonably soft and ductile.
