In general, the applications of D3 tool steel resemble those of D2 but it should be remembered that D3 has better wear resistance of the two steels and is preferred for such items as shear blades. Owing to its higher wear resistance, D3 tool steel is slightly more difficult to grind than D2.D3 exhibits excellent stability in heat treatment, holding size almost as well as the air-hardening, high-carbon, high-chromium die steels such as D2. APPLICATIONS: Forming rolls, drawing dies, forming, powder compaction tooling, and lamination dies.

Uses: Used to manufacture cold work dies and punches with small impact load and high wear resistance. Characteristics and scope of application: It is a widely used cold work die steel, with high strength, good hardenability and good wear resistance, but poor impact toughness. It is mainly used as cold stamping dies and punches, cold cutting scissors, drill sleeves, gauges, wire drawing dies, stamping dies, wire rolling plates, drawing dies and thread rolling dies that bear small impact loads and require high wear resistance. Therefore, it is used as a resistance welding electrode for general purposes, mainly as an electrode for spot welding or seam welding of low carbon steel, coated steel plate, and can also be used as an electrode grip, shaft and liner material when welding low carbon steel, or as a large mold, fixture of convex welding machine, stainless steel and heat-resistant steel mold or inlay electrode.
