RO Reverse osmosis is a high-pressure energy efficient water separation process. It is a method of extracting essentially pure and fresh water from polluted or salt water by forcing the water under pressure against a semi permeable membrane, which passes the pure water molecules, but filters out salts and other dissolved impurities.Reverse osmosis plants require a variety of pre-treatment techniques including softening, dechlorination, and anti-scalent treatment. Following pre-treatment, high levels of pressure send water through a semi-permeable membrane, which retains all contaminants but lets pure water pass through. Energy requirements depend on the concentration of salts and contaminants in the influent water; higher concentrations requires more energy to treat.
Water produced by plant RO may be used for several purposes like desalination, wastewater treatment, and the reclamation of dissolved minerals. An average drinking water RO plant system requires six KW hours of electricity to desalinate one cubic meter of water.The product flow of an RO Plant is mainly a function of temperature and pressure. System recovery (product divided by feed) is limited by the characteristics of the feed water and can be controlled through the use of recycle stream. Product quality is based on a percentage of dissolved solids fed to the membrane.
